Postpartum Doula
I started out doing postpartum doula work with my birth doula clients, and quickly realized how crucial postpartum support is for the entire family. Whether it is your first, second, or even third baby, adding a new member to the family is an intense adjustment, and I love helping make the transition easier on everyone.

You may be wondering what exactly a postpartum doula does. It varies by the doula, but the basic description of a postpartum doula (as depicted on the DONA International website) is a professional who:
- Offers education, companionship, and nonjudgmental support during the postpartum fourth trimester
- Assists with newborn care, family adjustment, meal preparation, and light household tidying
- Offers evidence-based information on infant feeding, emotional and physical recovery from birth, infant soothing, and coping skills for new parents
- Makes appropriate referrals to other professionals, as necessary
What this translates to in my work as a postpartum doula is that I help parents learn how to care for and soothe their baby (utilizing a lot of my training as a Happiest Baby on the Block educator), process their birth experience, get support with breastfeeding, be able to take a nap knowing their baby is well-cared for, stay well nourished, and not have to worry about household logistics or errands.
From my perspective as a psychotherapist, I know my work as a postpartum doula has a significant
impact on my clients: I am helping moms get more sleep, which has repeatedly been shown to correlate with lower rates of postpartum mood disorders. And I am helping both parents feel more confident and supported, which ultimately allows them to stay more connected as a couple and more present with their baby.
Overall, I think having a postpartum doula in the weeks after your baby’s birth is an important and necessary component of having a baby. I only wish I had taken my own advice and hired a postpartum doula after the birth of my son!!
