Therapeutic Postpartum Doula Support

I began doing postpartum doula work with my birth doula clients, and quickly realized how crucial postpartum support is for the entire family.   Adding a new member to the family (whether it is your first, second, or third baby) is an intense adjustment, and one that truly does require a village.  I utilize my skills as a psychotherapist, doula, and mom in my postpartum doula work and provide therapeutic postpartum doula support to families who need additional emotional support, had a difficult or traumatic birth, and/or who are at high risk for a postpartum mood disorder.

While some families can prepare ahead of time for what sort of postpartum support they need, many families are caught off guard by the intensity of parenthood and are surprised at the level of support they need.  I therefore cater the therapeutic nature of my postpartum doula services to each family, based on their specific needs.

That said, I do provide standard postpartum doula care to each family, in order to help them recover from the birth and adjust to having a new baby in the house.  A postpartum doula — as depicted on the DONA International website — is a professional who:

  • Offers education, companionship, and nonjudgmental support during the postpartum fourth trimester
  • Assists with newborn care, family adjustment, meal preparation, and light household tidying
  • Offers evidence-based information on infant feeding, emotional and physical recovery from birth, infant soothing, and coping skills for new parents
  • Makes appropriate referrals to other professionals, as necessary.

What this translates to is that as a postpartum doula I help parents learn how to care for and soothe their baby, get necessary support for breastfeeding success, be able to take a nap knowing their baby is well-cared for, stay well nourished, and not have to worry about household logistics or errands.

Adding on the therapeutic component, I provide additional support with the emotional adjustment to parenthood, processing the birth, assisting a mom/her partner in recognizing when “baby blues” may be turning into something more serious, and helping new parents stay connected in their relationship.

I once had a postpartum doula client tell me that years from now, as she looks back on her life, she will remember the time we spent processing her difficult birth, talking about motherhood, and helping her successfully breastfeed as one of the best parts of her life!  I wish that sort of transition to motherhood for every woman, and am happy to provide therapeutic postpartum doula support to families in the weeks after their birth.

My rate for therapeutic postpartum doula support is $60/hour.  Please Contact Me if you have questions about my services or would like to set up an interview to determine if we are a good fit and if therapeutic postpartum doula support is right for you.
